Short on time, but still want to keep your skin looking healthy and radiant? When it comes to skincare, it's easy to get overwhelmed by all of the brands, products and routines out there. But the great things is, you can keep your skin healthy and glowing with just 5 simple steps, even when you're stressed or busy. Just promise yourself some me time and consistency!
The five must-dos of skincare
Cleanse
Daily dirt, pollution, oil and makeup accumulate on your skin throughout the day, so it goes without saying, the first step in your skincare routine should be to cleanse your skin! Look for a gentle, nourishing cleanser that suits your skin type and use it both morning and night. We like the double cleanse method - using an oil-based cleanser to clean oil-based impurities (makeup, SPF, sebum, pollutants) followed by a gel cleanser to clean water-based impurities (sweat, dirt).
Tone
Not only does a toner help to remove any excess dirt and oil from your skin, it also works to balance your skin's pH levels. It's often overlooked in skincare, but it's an important step. Opt for a toner that is alcohol-free and contains soothing and hydrating ingredients (like witch hazel and aloe vera).
Moisturise
Moisturisers work to keep your skin healthy and hydrated, and they're for every skin type! Look for a moisturiser that's easily absorbed, won't clog your pores, and most importantly, developed for your skin type. Don't forget that skincare starts at the chest, so be sure to use morning and night on your face, neck and décolletage.
Exfoliate
Keep your skin fresh, smooth and radiant by regularly removing dead skin cells. Not only does exfoliating improve the texture and appearance of your skin, but it's also important to ensure that your other skincare products can properly absorb into your skin (therefore increasing their effectiveness). There's two types of exfoliation - manual/physical (scrubs) or chemical (using acids and enzymes). Choose the right method for your preferences and skin type. Be sure to exfoliate just once or twice a week for best results, without damaging your skin barrier.
Protect
Sun damage can lead to premature ageing, dark spots, pigmentation, uneven skin tone and even skin cancer. So it goes without saying, protecting your skin every day is incredibly important! Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen (30+ SPF or higher) and apply it as the last step in your skincare routine (whether you're leaving the house or not!).
Taking care of your skin doesn't need to be complicated, costly or time-consuming. Focus on the basics to keep your skin happy, healthy and radiant. If the time comes, you can always build out your routine with some targeted treatments and go from there!
