Winter hacks to keep your glow on

Posted by on

Winter’s here and it’s got your skin feeling dry. We here you! The good news is, we have some ever-so-simple hacks ranging from health to skincare to help you keep your glow on, even without the tan!

Now. We hate to break it to you. But dry skin will stay dry without some gentle exfoliation. Why? Because with layers of dry skin and dead skin cells, serums and moisturisers cannot properly penetrate the skin to do their thing!

We encourage you to use a gentle exfoliation formula with a mild, natural acid (e.g. hyaluronic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid, salicylic acid) to remove the dead skin cells for you, without manual exfoliation. Our favourite masking pastime is that of Canvas: Resurfacing AHA & BHA Treatment. Leave this on for 10mins or more and your skin will be baby soft and ready to absorb all of the goodness we know you’ll be applying to it!

If you’d rather do it yourself, find an exfoliator cream or powder and gently exfoliate your skin without being abrasive to the skin. We recommend Polished: Refining Exfoliant as it’s simple, easy to use, and my oh my it does the job! One pinch of Polished mixed with a cleanser and your skin will feel like silk.

Remember, you only need to exfoliate a few times a week to keep dead skin cells at bay. Over-exfoliating can cause the skin to react by producing excess oil.

Antioxidants are your friend

The skin can be attacked by free radical pollutants in every season. Free radicals are created from pollution such as smog, dust, smoke as well as overexposure to UV rays.

Free radicals can damage our precious skin in several forms ranging from discolouration (brown spots, broken blood vessels), weakened skin and breaking down collagen. The result? The ever-so-feared ageing effect.

So, regardless of the season, be sure to keep an antioxidant product in your skincare routine! Choose a product high in vitamin C to help combat the appearance of ageing. Vitamin C, derived from citrus, is known to help increase collagen production which enhances elasticity, while also brightening the skins complexion.

Our favourite antioxidant serum is Eternal: Plumping Deep Sea & Malachite Collagen Serum due to its high volume of vitamin C ingredients (Kakadu Plum, Desert Lime and Finger Lime).

Up your fats!

What excellent news. Increasing your daily intake of (good) fats can be linked to helping with dry skin. So, try a diet rich in nuts, oils, avocados, etc. to help boost your skincare efforts along! And, as always, stay super hydrated. The sun may not be beaming down and it may not be 40 degrees outside, but the body and the skin still needs its ample hydration to keep everything in check.

Simple skincare routine

What does dry skin need? Nourishment! We’ve curated a simply winter skin go-to routine to help keen that skin ever-so hydrated.

  1. Avoid cleansers that strip your face of moisture (a good way to test this is if your skin feels stiff after washing it – if it’s stiff, it’s stripping precious moisture!)
  2. Apply a toner that provides moisture AND also retains or locks this moisture in to the skin
  3. Remember that antioxidants are your friend! This is where vitamin C comes in handy. Protect or remedy the free radical pollutants that are still affecting your skin, even in winter
  4. Apply a really nourishing overnight cream
  5. Finish this off with a facial oil to seal in that much needed moisture
  6. Pop on a good lip balm to protect your sensitive lips against wind chill and chapping

This RAWKANVAS routine would simply be:

Purified: Purifying Cleanser

Harmony: Radiance Boosting Toner

Eternal: Plumping Deep Sea & Malachite Collagen Serum

Luna Vitality: Restoring Moisture Cream

Yesteryouth: Regenerating Facial Oil

Luscious: Conditioning Lip Treatment

Now, let’s see that skin glow like it’s a 1970’s summertime in California!
